Last week I visited Enniscorthy Community College in Enniscorthy, Wexford to create some wonderful mindfulness inspired art with the students of the Boro Suite ASD Unit.
We had three classes, each lasting an hour and a half.
During the sessions we drew mindful galaxies, where we talked about what they knew about the planets and space, how space made them feel and what colours we could find in space.
Each student made their very own happy planet out of paper plates, covering it with crepe paper and paper colours that made them feel the happiest, so that when they were in need of a lift, they could look at the planet they made and feel better. The process of ripping the paper was important, as this was a tactile process, and we talked about whether they enjoyed this or not and how it made them feel.
We then created good luck shooting stars. These stars were designed to be their own personal good luck charms. Again they decorated them in colours that made them feel happy, and we talked about what stars are, what wishes are, and what kinds of things people wish for. We tied them with thread strung with beads, so that they could display them on walls or hanging.
Finally, we had fun with foam clay planets! The feel of the foam clay went down really well with the kids, and we spoke about the texture and how it made them feel, and what colours they were doing their planets in and why. I gave some foam clay to the students to keep - it always makes me happy to share materials if they are enjoying a particular type of exercise the most!
I loved the sessions, it was so great getting to know all the students at the Boro Suite, and all the students got involved and chatted away to me throughout, which was a great success!
You can see some of the wonderful work they created below, and if you are looking for something similar for your school, get in contact.
